Teaching guide

Objective & content

This worksheet is about describing yourself and other people in a letter and a class survey: I'm short. I've got green eyes. I haven't got glasses. and What colour are your eyes? Have you got ...? Pupils read Maeve's letter, tick six details, find who three descriptions are, write back to Maeve and ask three classmates.

Pedagogical guide

Task 1 is a letter from Maeve to Tomas, her new pen friend. Maeve describes herself (short, long red hair in two plaits, green eyes, freckles, no glasses), her brother Dougie (very tall, short spiky blond hair, blue eyes) and her grandad (old, bald, a big grey beard and a moustache, glasses, brown eyes). There is no picture: pupils build it from the words. In task 2 pupils read the letter again and tick the right word for six details, for example Maeve is tall / short. In task 3 they write the name for three descriptions: He's got blue eyes (Dougie), She's got freckles (Maeve) and He's bald (Grandad). In task 4 pupils write back to Maeve, with the starter Dear Maeve, I'm ... I've got ... I haven't got ... In task 5 pupils ask three classmates What colour are your eyes?, Have you got glasses? and Have you got freckles? and write the answers in a table. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Say what you look like (I'm tall. I've got short dark hair and glasses.).
  2. (7 min) Pupils read Maeve's letter.
  3. (5 min) Tasks 2 and 3: pupils tick the right words and write who it is; check with the answer key.
  4. (8 min) Task 4: pupils write back to Maeve about themselves.
  5. (5 min) Task 5: pupils ask three classmates and fill in the table.

Adaptations

[S] Read the letter aloud; pupils point to their eyes, hair and glasses as they hear each word.

[A] Pupils add a person of their family to their letter.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil and room to stand up and ask three classmates for task 5. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the words for hair and faces and the colours; the sheet practises them in a real-life letter, so it works well after Hair, Eyes and Glasses!

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
