Teaching guide

Objective & content

This worksheet is about the words for describing people and the order of the words in She's got long curly red hair. Pupils write twelve words under twelve pictures, put the words of four sentences in order and describe a person in their family. By the end, pupils describe a person's hair, face and age in a few sentences.

Pedagogical guide

Task 1 shows twelve pictures (curly, straight, wavy and spiky hair, a ponytail, plaits, bald, a beard, a moustache, freckles, glasses, earrings) and a word box; each word is used once. The Remember! box is not a task: it gives the order (how long, what kind, then the colour) and the colours of hair (blond, dark, brown, black, red, grey) and eyes (blue, green, brown). In task 2 pupils put the words of four sentences in order, for example She's got (red / long / curly) hair, and write them out; the first one is done as an example. Tall, short, young and old appear in these sentences. In task 3 pupils describe a person in their family, with the starter My ... is tall / short / young / old. He's got ... She's got ... Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Say one thing about a few pupils (Anna has got long hair. Tom has got glasses.).
  2. (8 min) Task 1: pupils write the word under each picture; check with the answer key.
  3. (4 min) Read the Remember! box together: how long, what kind, then the colour.
  4. (7 min) Task 2: pupils put the words in order and write the sentences.
  5. (6 min) Task 3: pupils describe a person in their family.

Adaptations

[S] Say each word with a gesture first and let pupils copy it.

[A] Pupils describe a classmate in two sentences for the others to guess.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the colours and the verb to be; the sheet gives all the other words. Allow time for task 1, which has twelve words.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
