At the Station!
Interactive exercises to consolidate your students’ learning.
Pupils look at a busy station with eight numbered people and read five visitors' messages (I'm old. I've got curly hair, glasses and a small suitcase.), writing the number of the person each message describes; three people are not visitors. Then they tick Yes or No for six sentences, write a message for one of the three other people and play a describing game with a partner (What does she look like?). Answer key included.

Objective & content
This worksheet uses one big picture to practise all the words for describing people, and the question What does she look like? Pupils look at eight numbered people at a station, read five messages and write the number of each visitor, tick Yes or No for six sentences, write a message of their own and describe people in pairs.
Pedagogical guide
Task 1 is the picture: Lucan is at the station and five visitors are on the train. Eight people stand on the platform, each with a number under their feet. In task 2 pupils read five messages (Granny Rosalind, Uncle Sol, Ottie, Aunt Winnie and Marco), for example I'm tall. I've got short black hair and a big beard., and write the number of the person; three people (2, 4 and 6) are not visitors. In task 3 pupils look at the picture again and tick Yes or No for six sentences, for example Number 2 is bald. In task 4 pupils write the message of number 2, 4 or 6, with the starter I'm ... I've got ... The last box gives the question for the game: What does she look like? She's young. She's got a ponytail. Number 6! Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Pupils look at the eight people together; ask pupils to say what they see.
- (10 min) Pupils read the five messages and write the number of each visitor; check with the answer key.
- (5 min) Pupils look at the picture again and tick Yes or No for the six sentences.
- (5 min) Pupils write a message for number 2, 4 or 6.
- (5 min) Pairs play the game: one pupil describes a person, the other says the number.
Adaptations
[S] Find Granny Rosalind together, word by word.
[A] Pupils describe a person for the whole class to find.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the words for hair and faces and the colours; this sheet uses all of them in one picture, so it works well as the last sheet after Hair, Eyes and Glasses! Allow time to look at the picture: the people are small.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
