Teaching guide

Objective & content

A two-page printable that goes with the Fish and Chips episode Make a Sandwich: six numbered foods, in the order Fish makes his sandwich (bread, cheese, tomato, ham, egg, sandwich), for pupils to find and label, then the picture to colour, with the teacher key on page two. By the end, pupils can name six foods without a word bank.

Pedagogical guide

Six pins, not the usual ten to sixteen: the series teaches four to six words per episode and the sheet checks exactly those. Five of the six are A1; "ham" is A2, a declared exception for this episode, kept because it is always shown on screen. Watch for "egg" and "ham" (three letters, easy to swap) and for "tomato" (no final "e").

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Play the episode's test: point at a number and ask "What's this?"; pupils answer "Bread!", "Cheese!"... like Chips.
  2. (10 min) Hand out page 1. Pupils copy the right word from the word list onto each numbered line.
  3. (5 min) Correct from page 2, food by food, saying each word aloud before writing it.
  4. (10 min) Colouring.

Adaptations

[S] Do the pointing game first, then let pupils draw a line from each number to its word in the list instead of copying it.

[A] Fold the word list away: pupils write the words from memory, then check with a partner.

Materials & prerequisites

Page 1 printed for every pupil, plus coloured pencils. Keep page 2, the teacher key. Black and white printing is enough and is what the sheet is designed for.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
