Objective & content
Five activity sheets about food and what you like in one PDF, for a class working at A0+. The pack teaches one point, food and saying what you like, through five kinds of activity: pupils sort food words into baskets, feed Gus the monster and draw a lunchbox, take a food survey, order at a café, and look for food in a family picnic picture. A contents page opens the pack, and the answers and teacher notes for every sheet are at the back. Each sheet is also on the site on its own.
Pedagogical guide
The order goes from the words to the full picture. Yummy or Yucky? comes first: pupils sort sixteen food words into four baskets (fruit, vegetables, sweet things, drinks) and write I like strawberries. I don't like peas. Feed the Monster! adds meal words: pupils unscramble six food words, read what Gus likes, draw his lunchbox and their own. The Food Survey turns the words into questions: pupils read about three children, then ask Do you like pizza? and answer Yes, I do. / No, I don't. At the Café! gives a use for the words: pupils label a café counter, complete a dialogue and play cafés with Can I have a cake, please? Here you are. Thank you! The Picnic! ends the pack: pupils find food in a family picnic picture, circle Yes or No about the people and write what they like at a picnic.
Suggested procedure
- (25 min) Yummy or Yucky?: pupils sort sixteen food words into four baskets and write what they like and don't like.
- (25 min) Feed the Monster!: pupils unscramble six food words, draw Gus's lunchbox from his lines and draw their own.
- (25 min) The Food Survey: pupils read about three children, tick and cross a grid, then ask three friends five questions.
- (25 min) At the Café!: pupils label a café counter, complete a dialogue and play cafés in pairs.
- (25 min) The Picnic!: pupils find food in a picnic picture, circle Yes or No and write what they like at a picnic.
About 125 minutes in all: use the sheets in this order over several lessons, or pick the ones you need.
Adaptations
[S] Read each text and word list aloud before pupils start, and do the first item of each task together.
[A] Fast finishers write one more sentence about food they like on the back of each sheet. The page of each sheet on the site gives more ideas.
Materials & prerequisites
One photocopy per pupil of each sheet, in colour or in black and white (the pack comes in both versions). Pupils need a pencil; colouring pencils are optional. Pupils need no food words beforehand, as each sheet gives its words with pictures, and the pack teaches I like and I don't like from the first sheet. Keep the answer pages at the back for yourself. Each sheet can also be used on its own.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
