Teaching guide

Objective & content

By the end, A2+ pupils can make a plan together: suggest with Shall we ...? and How about ...?, answer with Good idea! or I'm not sure. I'd rather ..., and announce the decision with We're going to .... The bank is 9 projectable slides: a how-to slide with an example, then 8 plans (an end-of-term class party, a birthday treat, a school trip, a sleepover, a winter weekend, a charity day...), each with three questions (Where? What food? What after?) and three pictured choices for each question.

Pedagogical guide

Use it as a five-minute warm-up for speaking in groups. Every choice is something teenagers want to do or eat now (laser tag, an escape game, a trampoline park, bubble tea, tacos, churros), so the deck is also a chance to meet new words. There is no right answer: the group has to agree, and agreeing makes pupils suggest, refuse politely and give a reason. The slides are interchangeable: one or two per lesson.

Suggested procedure

  1. (1 min) Show the how-to slide and read the example together.
  2. (3 min) Show one plan and read the three questions. In groups of three, pupils agree on one picture for each question.
  3. (1 min) Each group tells the class its plan: We're going to go bowling, and then we're going to have tacos!

Adaptations

  • [S] Write Shall we ...? and We're going to ... on the board and let pupils point at the pictures as they speak.
  • [A] Add a problem (It's raining!, We've only got 10 pounds!) and groups change their plan, or groups invent a new plan and three questions for the class.

Materials & prerequisites

A projector or screen; the bank is a 16:9 PDF, one slide per page, with no printing needed. Assumes going to for plans and simple suggestions with let's.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
