Teaching guide

Objective & content

A two-page printable that goes with the Now You Say It episode How Are You?: six children's faces, one feeling each. Pupils write the feeling word under each number, answer the question about themselves, then colour the faces, with the teacher key on page two.

Pedagogical guide

All six words are A1 and each one is shown by the face alone, which is why the set avoids feelings a drawing cannot settle: a face cannot tell thirsty from hungry. The four feelings of the episode are here (hungry, happy, tired, and fine as the pupil's own answer), with angry, sad and cold added so there is a real choice to make.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Play the episode's game: point at a face and ask "How are you?"; a pupil answers for that child, "I'm tired."
  2. (10 min) Hand out page 1. Pupils write the word for each numbered face from the list.
  3. (5 min) Pupils answer the last line about themselves.
  4. (5 min) Correct from page 2.
  5. (10 min) Colouring.

Adaptations

[S] Read the word list aloud and let pupils match number to word.

[A] Fold the word list away and let pupils write from memory, then check with a partner.

Materials & prerequisites

Page 1 printed for every pupil, plus coloured pencils. Keep page 2, the teacher key. Black and white printing is enough and is what the sheet is designed for.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
