Objective & content

This activity sheet is about the body, in a story. Pupils read a short story in which a class plays Simon Says, circle six words, write two orders of their own and find ten body words in a word search: head, hand, finger, arm, leg, foot, toe, eye, ear and mouth. By the end, pupils understand orders such as Touch your nose! and give orders of their own.

Pedagogical guide

The story has six short lines. It is Friday and the class plays Simon Says; Miss Lee is Simon. The narrator touches the nose, puts the hands on the head, stands on one leg and closes the eyes. The last order, "Touch your toes!", has no "Simon says", so the narrator is out. A picture shows the teacher and two children with their hands on their heads. Pupils then read six half-sentences and circle one of two words: Miss Lee (not Tom), nose, head, leg, eyes and toes; each question has one answer. Next, pupils write two orders that start "Simon says: touch your ..." and "Simon says: ..." and play them with a friend. The last task is a word search of ten by ten letters with ten body words, across, down and diagonal; the list of words is under the grid. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Play Simon Says with the class, then read the story aloud while pupils mime it.
  2. (5 min) Pupils read the story, look at the picture and circle the right word in each question.
  3. (5 min) Pupils write two orders and play them in pairs.
  4. (10 min) Pupils find the ten body words in the grid and check them against the list.

Adaptations

[S] Mime each line of the story together before pupils read it.

[A] Pupils write a third order with and: "Touch your nose and your ears!"

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need only a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know a few body words (the sheet follows My Body! in the pack); the other words of the story are in the text, and the word search lists its words under the grid.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
