Teaching guide

Objective & content

This activity sheet is about what we do with our feelings. Pupils learn seven actions (smile, laugh, cry, shout, shake, hide, hug), link them to a feeling with When I'm ..., I ..., and then colour five jars to show what each feeling looks like for them. By the end, pupils say and write When I'm angry, I shout.

Pedagogical guide

Task 1 shows seven pictures and a word box: pupils write smile, laugh, cry, shout, shake, hide or hug under each. In task 2 they read seven lines and circle one action out of three: happy, smile; sad, cry; angry, shout; scared, hide; cold, shake; funny, laugh; and "When my friend is sad, I ... my friend": hug. In task 3 they colour five empty jars (happy, angry, calm, sad, scared) with the colour each feeling has for them; task 4 gives five sentence starters ("For me, happy is", "When I'm calm, I" ...) to write about those colours. Tasks 3 and 4 have no right answer. Page 2 gives the answer key for tasks 1 and 2 and the teacher notes.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Say "When I'm happy, I ..." and smile; let pupils show the other actions.
  2. (5 min) Task 1: pupils write the word under each picture.
  3. (10 min) Task 2: pupils read each line and circle the action; check with the answer key.
  4. (10 min) Tasks 3 and 4: pupils colour the jars and write about their colours.
  5. (5 min) Pupils compare their jar colours with a partner: "For me, angry is red. And you?"

Adaptations

[S] Mime each action together before task 2.

[A] Pupils compare their jar colours with a partner ("For me, angry is red. And you?").

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils need colouring pencils for task 3. They should know the colours and the feeling words happy, sad, angry and scared; the sheet only adds the actions.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
