Objective & content
This activity sheet is about how the body feels. Pupils name six body feelings (hungry, hot, cold, ill, sleepy, hurt) from pictures of a girl, link seven of them to what a child needs, and answer Are you ...? questions for a boy called Ben. By the end, pupils say I'm hungry. and answer Yes, I am. or No, I'm not.
Pedagogical guide
Task 1 shows six pictures of one girl and a word box: pupils write hungry, hot, cold, ill, sleepy or hurt under each (there is no picture for thirsty). In task 2 pupils read seven lines, from "I'm hungry." to "I'm hurt.", and write what the child needs from a bank of eight pictures with their words (a sandwich, a glass of water, an ice cream, a coat, a doctor, my bed, a plaster, a camera). One picture is left over, because no feeling needs a camera, and thirsty is met here, with the glass of water. In task 3 pupils look at Ben, in the snow in a T-shirt, and answer five questions with Yes, I am. or No, I'm not.: cold yes, hot no, hungry yes, sleepy no, hurt yes. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Mime "hungry" and "cold" and let the class guess.
- (5 min) Task 1: pupils write the word under each picture.
- (10 min) Task 2: pupils read each line and write what the child needs; check with the answer key.
- (5 min) Task 3: pupils look at Ben and answer the five questions.
- (10 min) In pairs, pupils ask each other "Are you hungry / sleepy / hot?" and answer.
Adaptations
[S] Practise the two short answers aloud first: "Yes, I am." and "No, I'm not."
[A] Pupils add "because" to their answers ("Yes, I am. I'm in the snow.").
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils only need to know I'm and the verb to be: the sheet introduces the body words. It is the first sheet of the Feelings Activity Pack.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
