Objective & content
This activity sheet is a picture to explore, with a class survey. Pupils look at one party scene and decide which of ten people and things are there, read why a dog, a boy and a dad feel as they do, and ask three friends how they feel at a party. By the end, pupils use feelings with people (a proud dad, a shy boy), because, and Are you ...? Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
Pedagogical guide
Task 1 is one picture of a birthday party and ten phrases to tick or cross. Six are there: an excited girl (the birthday girl, jumping), a proud dad (taking her photo), a shy boy (behind his mum), a grumpy boy (on the sofa, arms crossed), a hungry dog (eating cake on the floor) and a tired grandad (yawning in an armchair). Four are not: a scared cat, an angry baby, a lonely girl and a thirsty grandma. In task 2 pupils circle why: the dog is happy because it has got some cake, the boy is shy because he doesn't know the children, the dad is proud because it is his daughter's birthday. Task 3 is a survey: pupils ask three friends "Are you shy at a party?", "Are you excited on your birthday?" and "Are you scared of balloons?" and write Yes or No. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Ask the class: "How do you feel at a party?"
- (10 min) Task 1: pupils look at the picture and tick what they can see; four are not there.
- (5 min) Task 2: pupils circle why; check with the answer key.
- (10 min) Task 3: pupils ask three friends the questions and write Yes or No, then tell the class about one friend ("Lena is shy at a party.").
Adaptations
[S] Point to each person together and say the feeling first.
[A] Pupils write about a person they did not tick in task 1 ("There isn't a cat.").
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the feelings words from the other sheets of the pack, so this is a good last sheet to revise them. It is also a good taster of the pack.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
