About the series

Every famous dish came from somewhere else first, and somebody always argues about who made it. In this series you will travel the world one plate at a time, from fish and chips to jambalaya, and find out where your favourite meal really comes from.

Episodes (6)

  1. 1

    Fish & Chips: A British Classic

    Britain's most famous meal. Hot white fish, thick fried potatoes, salt and vinegar: a very simple dish whose story starts in two different places at once.

    3:28
  2. 2

    American Jambalaya

    One pot, four cultures. In Louisiana, Spanish cooks could not find the spice that makes paella yellow, so they used tomatoes and peppers; French, African and Native American cooking did the rest. <!-- jsonld-tags-v2.1 --> <script type="application/ld+json"> { "@context": "https://thebigchallenge.com/schemas/academy/episode", "@type": "Episode", "id": "the-world-on-a-plate_ep-02", "level": "A1-", "series": "the-world-on-a-plate", "tags": { "grammar": [ "be-affirmative", "present-simple", "there-is-are", "possessive-adjectives", "prepositions-place-time", "question-words" ], "vocabulary": [ "meals", "food-drinks", "cooking-verbs", "recipes" ], "culture": [ "usa-states" ], "curriculum_axes": [ "c3-child-and-wider-environment" ], "skills_targeted": [ "listening-comprehension", "vocabulary-building", "cultural-awareness" ] }, "seo_links": { "primary_cluster": "vocabulaire", "primary_slug": "recettes", "secondary_pages": [ { "cluster": "vocabulaire", "slug": "repas" }, { "cluster": "civilization", "slug": "etats-americains" } ], "keywords_fr": [ "jambalaya", "cuisine de Louisiane", "vocabulaire cuisine anglais" ], "cta_audience": "eleve" } } </script>
