Teaching guide

Objective & content

By the end, A1+ pupils can react to everyday social moments with the right fixed phrase, such as Sorry!, Bless you!, Can I have ..., please? or Excuse me, where is ...?. The bank is 19 projectable slides: a how-to slide, then 18 pictured moments (a friend's birthday, a sneeze, a café, being late for class), each with the same bank of 12 useful phrases.

Pedagogical guide

Use it as a five-minute warm-up to build the phrases pupils need every day. Because the same phrase bank sits on every slide, pupils choose rather than invent, and the choice is the learning: the moment tells them which phrase fits. Acting it out in pairs turns the phrase into a short exchange. The slides are interchangeable: show two or three per lesson.

Suggested procedure

  1. (1 min) Show the how-to slide and read the example together.
  2. (2 min) Show one moment and read it together. Pupils choose a phrase and say it.
  3. (2 min) Two pupils act it out in front of the class.

Adaptations

  • [S] Say two phrases: which one is right?
  • [A] Hide the phrases and pupils say it without help, or add a second sentence to the phrase.

Materials & prerequisites

A projector or screen; the bank is a 16:9 PDF, one slide per page, with no printing needed. Assumes Can I ...? for requests and simple greetings.

Curriculum alignment

Maps to Cycle 3 "child and close environment" (FR): polite everyday exchanges with people around us.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
