Les pièges à éviter
1. Pas au présent continu
Understand = verbe d'état (stative). On ne dit jamais I am understanding. Toujours I understand.
2. Understood = compris
Comme adjectif/exclamation, understood = compris ! C'est entendu. Be at the office by 8. Understood?

Le prétérit de to understand est understood, invariable. Participe passé : understood (identique). Understand → understood → understood.
Pourquoi understood et pas understanded ?+
Understand vient de under + stand. Comme stand est irrégulier (stand → stood → stood), understand suit le même schéma. Préfixe under- ne change rien à la conjugaison.
Comment dire « je ne comprends pas » en anglais ?+
I don't understand. À ne pas confondre avec I don't know (= je ne sais pas). Sorry, I don't understand. Could you say that again? = désolé, je ne comprends pas. Pouvez-vous répéter ?
Peut-on dire I am understanding ?+
Non, understand est un verbe d'état (stative verb), comme know, believe, love. On ne l'utilise pas au présent continu. Toujours présent simple : I understand.
Quelle est la différence entre understand et know ?+
Understand = comprendre (saisir le sens, suivre l'explication). Know = savoir (avoir l'information, connaître). I know her name (information). I understand the rules (sens, raisonnement).
