Le trappole da evitare
1. I burnt me the hand ❌
In italiano il verbo è pronominale e la parte del corpo prende l'articolo: Mi sono bruciato la mano. In inglese non c'è riflessivo e ci vuole il possessivo: I burnt my hand ✓, mai I burnt me the hand ❌.
2. Burned o burnt?
L'italiano ha una forma sola, l'inglese due, ed è una famiglia intera: burned/burnt, learned/learnt, smelled/smelt, spelled/spelt, dreamed/dreamt. Gli Stati Uniti preferiscono -ed, la Gran Bretagna -t. Come aggettivo, però, si dice sempre burnt: burnt toast ✓.

Burned è la forma regolare, preferita negli Stati Uniti e nei contesti formali. Burnt è la forma irregolare, preferita in Gran Bretagna. Come aggettivo (burnt toast, burnt out) si dice sempre burnt, mai burned.

Burn o set on fire?+
Burn = bruciare, da solo o con un complemento. Set on fire = dare fuoco a qualcosa, di proposito. The house burned (è bruciata da sé) / They set the house on fire (qualcuno ha appiccato il fuoco).
