1. Prendere (una palla, un animale, un ladro)
- I caught the ball. — Ho preso la palla.
- The police caught the thief. — La polizia ha preso il ladro.
2. Prendere (autobus, treno, aereo)
Catch the bus / train / plane = non perderlo.
- I catch the bus at 8. — Prendo l'autobus alle 8.
- We caught the last train. — Abbiamo preso l'ultimo treno.
3. Prendere (una malattia)
Catch a cold / the flu.
- I caught a cold. — Ho preso il raffreddore.
Le trappole da evitare
1. Catch o take per i mezzi
Catch = prendere al volo, non perdere (il mezzo sta per partire). Take = prendere, in generale. Vanno bene tutti e due: I catch / take the bus ✓. Occhio piuttosto alla preposizione: si viaggia on the bus, mai in the bus, anche se in italiano dici in autobus.
2. Catch up, un phrasal verb
Catch up (with someone) = recuperare il ritardo, oppure aggiornarsi: Let's catch up next week. I verbi con la particella non ti sono estranei, l'italiano ha andare via, buttare giù, tirare fuori: qui la particella cambia il senso allo stesso modo.
