Objective & content

This Look Closer episode (Kenya mini-series, episode 2) opens with a hook: a giraffe that lives in a capital city. The narrator then presents Nairobi, its more than four million people, and Nairobi National Park, Kenya's first national park (opened in 1946), with its lions, zebras and rhinos. The park has a fence on three sides and an open south, so animals can walk out to other wild places. The language is present simple, there is / there are, can and one regular past form (opened), with vocabulary for wild animals, town life and large numbers. Learners listen, then answer the 10 questions in the app. The narrator ends by asking if they would like a park like this in their city (not one of the 10 questions).

Materials & prerequisites

The folder holds the audio, the slideshow, the script, a pupil sheet with the 10 questions (7 on facts, 3 on vocabulary) and a teacher sheet with the answer key (PDF); it has no lesson plan. A short episode works well as a lesson opener: play it twice, hand out the pupil sheet, then use the closing question for class discussion. Learners should know town words (bus, market, street) and the numbers above 1,000.

Curriculum alignment

Tagged countries-and-landscapes (6e, "Pays et paysages"; study topic: Kenya's national parks). The episode targets CEFR level A1+.
