Read and Draw!
Interactive exercises to consolidate your students’ learning.
Samira introduces her family: pupils read what her grandma, her dad and her sister look like (She's old. She's got grey hair. She's got glasses.) and draw each one. Then they draw themselves and write about themselves, and ask three friends four questions, such as Have you got blue eyes?, in a class survey. Answer key included.

Objective & content
This activity sheet is about reading a description and drawing the person. Samira introduces her grandma, her dad and her sister; pupils read three short lines about each and draw them, then draw themselves and ask three friends about eyes, hair, glasses and freckles. By the end, pupils say She's old. He's got a beard. I've got blue eyes. and answer Have you got glasses? Yes, I have. / No, I haven't.
Pedagogical guide
Samira says hello in a speech bubble and each box is headed in her voice: My grandma, My dad, My sister. In each box pupils read three lines (for example He's tall. He's got short black hair. He's got a beard.) and draw the person in the upright frame beside them. In the fourth box, And you?, pupils draw themselves and complete two lines that begin I've got. The survey at the end has four questions (Have you got blue eyes? long hair? glasses? freckles?) and room for three friends; pupils write Yes or No, using the fixed formula Have you got ...? Yes, I have. / No, I haven't. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Read Samira's words and the first box together, and draw her grandma on the board.
- (10 min) Task 1: pupils read the lines about Samira's grandma, dad and sister and draw each one.
- (5 min) Task 2: pupils draw themselves and complete two lines that begin I've got.
- (5 min) Task 3: pupils ask three friends the four questions and write Yes or No.
Adaptations
[S] Read each line aloud and draw it on the board together.
[A] Pupils write three lines about a friend for a partner to draw.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil, and an eraser if they want to draw again. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils need to know the words tall, old, young, hair, glasses and a beard. The drawing does not have to be good: it shows whether pupils understood the lines, so allow time for it.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
