At the Park!

Interactive exercises to consolidate your students’ learning.

Pupils look at a busy park picture with eight people and use the words of the pack again. They read ten short phrases, such as a man with a beard, find each person and tick it, or cross it when the person is not in the park. Then they read four sentences and circle Yes or No, and play in pairs: one says She's got glasses! and the other points. Answer key included.

Teaching guide

Objective & content

This activity sheet is about finding people in one big picture. Pupils read ten phrases such as a girl with curly hair, look for each person in a busy park and tick or cross it, then read four sentences and circle Yes or No. By the end, pupils say She's got glasses! He's got a beard! and point to the right person.

Pedagogical guide

The picture shows eight people far apart from each other in a town park: a grandma on the bench, a girl on the swing, a man with a beard and a dog, a grandad feeding the ducks, a mum with a pram, a boy with a ball, a girl on the grass and a young man with a kite. There is no writing in it. In task 1 pupils read ten phrases (a grandma with glasses, a man with a beard ...) and tick the person they find; three phrases (a girl with glasses, a man with long hair, a grandad with curly hair) are not in the picture, so pupils cross them. In task 2 pupils read four sentences, such as The grandma has got glasses., and circle Yes or No. In task 3 pairs say a sentence and point. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Look at the picture together: who is on the bench, who is on the swing?
  2. (10 min) Task 1: pupils read each phrase, look for the person and tick or cross; three are not in the park.
  3. (5 min) Task 2: pupils read the four sentences and circle Yes or No; check with the answer key.
  4. (5 min) Task 3: in pairs, one pupil says a sentence (She's got glasses!) and the other points.

Adaptations

[S] Find the grandma together first.

[A] Pupils write two sentences about a person in the park.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. The sheet uses the describing words again, so it works best after Look at Me!, but pupils who know the words can do it alone. Allow time for task 1, which has the most phrases.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
