Teaching guide

Objective & content

This activity sheet is about describing a person so that others can find them. Pupils look at a board of ten faces, read six riddles in the first person and write the name, then play the game Guess Who! in pairs. By the end, pupils say I've got curly hair and a beard. and ask and answer Have you got glasses? Yes, I have. / No, I haven't.

Pedagogical guide

Task 1 shows ten people with their names, head and shoulders: the same board is used for the game. In task 2 pupils read six riddles, such as I'm old. I've got a moustache. and I've got curly hair and a beard., and write the name: each riddle fits one person only, and none depends on a colour. Four people (Edith, Ines, Pilar and Felix) are in no riddle: they are there for the game. In task 3 pairs play Guess Who!: one pupil chooses a person and keeps it secret, the other asks Have you got glasses? and crosses out faces lightly in pencil until one is left, then guesses (Is it Kwame?). The questions and the short answers (Yes, I have. / No, I haven't.) are given as a fixed formula. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Ask "Who knows the game Guess Who?" and play one round on the board with a pupil.
  2. (5 min) Task 1: pupils look at the ten people and read their names.
  3. (8 min) Task 2: pupils read the six riddles and write the name; check with the answer key.
  4. (7 min) Task 3: in pairs, pupils play Guess Who! and then swap roles.

Adaptations

[S] Play the first round as a class.

[A] Pupils ask Are you old? too.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil and an eraser, to cross out faces lightly and play again. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the words for hair, glasses, a beard and a moustache; the sheet Look at Me! teaches them. Allow time for task 3, the game.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
