1. Dare un'opinione
I think (that) + proposizione. Il that è spesso omesso.
- I think (that) English is fun. — Penso che l'inglese sia divertente.
- What do you think? — Tu che ne pensi?
2. Riflettere (azione in corso)
Be thinking = essere in fase di riflessione.
- I'm thinking about it. — Ci sto riflettendo.
- Let me think. — Fammi pensare.
3. Credere a torto (al past simple)
- I thought you were French. — Pensavo che tu fossi francese.
- We thought the test was easy. We were wrong. — Pensavamo che il test fosse facile. Ci sbagliavamo.

Le trappole da evitare
1. Think about vs think of
In italiano si dice pensare a qualcosa, e la preposizione a spinge a calcare think to ❌ — che non esiste in inglese. Si dice think about (riflettere su, considerare: I'm thinking about my exam) oppure think of (ricordarsi, avere un'idea: I can't think of his name), mai think to.
2. Thought = past simple E participio passato
Il past simple e il participio passato sono identici: thought. I thought (past simple) ≠ I have thought (present perfect), stessa parola ma usi diversi a seconda del contesto.
3. Non thinking per dare un'opinione
Per dare un'opinione si usa think al present simple, non am thinking. L'errore è frequente perché l'italiano ha stare + gerundio come struttura produttiva, e la tentazione è di applicarla anche qui: I think English is fun ✓ (opinione), mai I'm thinking English is fun ❌. I'm thinking about my homework ✓ resta corretto (riflessione in corso, non opinione).

Il past simple di to think è thought (pronunciato /θɔːt/), invariabile. Anche il participio passato è thought (identico al past simple). Think → thought → thought.
Perché non si dice thinked al past simple?+
Think è un verbo irregolare. Il suo past simple non segue la regola del -ed. La forma corretta è thought, mai thinked. È un errore classico agli inizi.
Che differenza c'è tra think e believe?+
Think = pensare, avere un'opinione o supporre (più leggero). Believe = credere fermamente, essere convinto (più forte). I think it'll rain (penso che pioverà). I believe in justice (credo nella giustizia). Entrambi possono tradurre «credere» a seconda del contesto.
Che differenza c'è tra think about e think of?+
Think about = riflettere su, considerare in dettaglio. Think of = ricordarsi, immaginare, avere un'idea. I'm thinking about my future (ci sto riflettendo). I can't think of his name (non riesco a ricordarmi il suo nome). What do you think of this idea? (Che ne pensi di questa idea?).
Come si dice «credo di sì / di no» in inglese?+
Si dice I think so (credo di sì) e I don't think so (credo di no). Molto comune nel parlato, in risposta a una domanda. Senza ripetere la frase completa.
