Activity Objective & Principle
The objective is to introduce the concept of synonyms and consolidate students' basic vocabulary by having them associate pairs of high-frequency adjectives.
The activity consists of a synonym matching exercise focused on general adjectives. Students must connect pairs of words with similar meanings. The vocabulary is composed of essential words that allow them to begin developing lexical flexibility.
Suggested Procedure
Before the activity (~5 min): One word, several ideas
Simply explain what a synonym is (a word that means the same thing). Write a very simple word on the board (e.g., "big") and ask students if they know other words to say the same thing (e.g., "large").
During the activity (~5-10 min): Matching game
Distribute the activity sheet. Complete the first pair as a large group to ensure the instructions are understood. Let students, individually or in pairs, connect the other pairs. Lead a collective correction, having them repeat the words to practice pronunciation.
After the activity (~10 min): Word exchange
Write very simple sentences using one of the studied adjectives on the board. Invite students to come to the board to erase the adjective and replace it with its synonym.
Adaptations
To simplify: Use gestures or images to illustrate the meaning of each adjective before starting the exercise. Do the entire activity as a large, guided group.
To extend: Create flashcards with the studied adjectives. Students can play a "Memory" game to find synonym pairs.
