Objective & Summary

The main pedagogical objective is to reinforce the recognition and memorization of A2 level vocabulary related to jobs and professions (author, chef, lawyer, pilot, etc.) by developing the ability to categorize and identify a word that is not a job. The resource is an "Odd One Out" exercise composed of seven lines of four words. In each line, the majority of words designate a profession, while the odd one out is an A2 common noun from another semantic field (e.g.: ship (transport), money (abstract), castle, library (places/buildings)). The student must circle the word that does not belong to the lexical field of work.


Suggested Procedure

Before the activity (~5 min): NAMING JOBS AND THEIR ACTIONS

  • Getting started: The teacher distributes the worksheet. Write 'Jobs & Professions' on the board. Ask students to list jobs they would like to do or that they know, in English. Reactivate the use of the verb To Be (e.g.: "I am a **student**").

  • Concept review: Remind them of the 'Odd One Out' rule: in each line, which word is **not** a person (who does a job)?

During the activity (~15-20 min): CLASSIFYING AND CONTEXTUALIZING PROFESSIONS

  • Step 1: Individual resolution (10 min). Students read and circle the odd one out. Encourage students to try and recall the action or workplace associated with each job to confirm its status as a profession.

  • Step 2: Pair verification and justification (5-10 min). In pairs, students compare their choices. They prepare oral justification using the complete sentence: "Ship is the odd one out because **author, assistant, and director** are **jobs** (or **people**)."

After the activity (~10-15 min): DESCRIBING A JOB AND ITS WORKPLACE

  • Collective correction: Proceed with oral correction, noting the professions on the board. To deepen A2 understanding, try to link the jobs from the list to the odd one out places: "The **journalist** works at the **office**", "The **lawyer** works at the **palace** (sometimes)".

  • Written production: Ask students to choose a job from the list and describe in two simple sentences what they do and where they work (e.g.: "A **pilot** flies a plane. He works at the **airport**") using the appropriate articles (A/AN).


Adaptations

  • To simplify: Provide a word bank for the odd one out categories (Transport, Building, Money) and ask students to classify the odd ones out into this bank after identifying them.

  • To deepen: Introduce relative pronouns **WHO** to define professions (A2): (e.g.: "A **chef** is a person **who** cooks food in a restaurant"). Students must create a simple definition for a job from the list.
