Teaching guide

Objective & content

This documentary episode of Animals & Creatures of Australia presents the koala in an A1- script. The narrator first corrects the name "koala bear", then describes the animal's body, its diet of eucalyptus leaves, its long hours of sleep, the meaning of its name and the way a male koala leaves a scent message on trees. The language focus is the present simple, with be, can and basic adjectives for description, and animal and physical-description vocabulary (joey, herbivore, leaves, nocturnal). The skill is listening for facts, as in "A koala is a marsupial, not a bear."
