Activity Objective & Principle
The main objective is to encourage students to enrich their descriptive vocabulary by identifying, memorizing, and using synonyms of common adjectives.
The activity consists of a synonym matching exercise. Students must connect pairs of adjectives with similar meanings to form correct duos. The words to be associated are adjectives useful for describing people. The activity helps to raise awareness of language nuances and to store lexical alternatives for more elaborate productions.
Suggested Procedure
Before the activity (~5 min): ACTIVATE KNOWLEDGE
Project an image of a character (real or fictional) and ask students to describe them orally. Write the suggested adjectives on the board to elicit their basic vocabulary.
During the activity (~5-10 min): ENRICH VOCABULARY
Distribute the activity sheet. Students, individually or in pairs, connect the synonym pairs.
Conduct a collective correction by having students pronounce the words aloud. For each pair, ask a student to construct a simple sentence.
After the activity (~10 min): PUT INTO PRACTICE
Revisit the character from the beginning and ask students to describe them again, mandatory using at least three of the synonyms seen during the exercise.
Alternatively, ask students to write a short description of a classmate or a celebrity using a minimum of four new adjectives seen during the activity.
Adaptations
To simplify: Complete the first two pairs as a whole group to ensure good understanding of the instructions. Allow the use of a dictionary for the most difficult words.
To extend: Challenge students to find a third synonym or an antonym for each pair. They can also classify certain adjectives by order of intensity.
