Activity Objective & Principle
The pedagogical objective is to consolidate and expand students' lexicon on the themes of nature and the environment by working on specific adjective synonyms.
The activity consists of a synonym matching exercise. Students are invited to link pairs of adjectives with very similar meanings. The vocabulary covers notions related to geography, climate, and characteristics of the natural world. The activity allows students to vary their vocabulary to describe natural phenomena, places, or environmental issues.
Suggested Procedure
Before the activity (~5 min): BRAINSTORMING
Write a keyword (e.g., "ENVIRONMENT") on the board and ask students to list all adjectives they know related to this theme. This helps activate their prior knowledge.
During the activity (~5-10 min): IDEA ASSOCIATION
Distribute the activity sheet. Students, individually or in pairs, link the synonym pairs.
Lead a collective correction, ensuring proper pronunciation of the terms. For each pair, ask for an example sentence to contextualize the vocabulary.
After the activity (~10 min): CONCRETE APPLICATION
Project an image of a landscape (a forest, a desert, a pole) or a world map.
Ask students to describe what they see orally or in a few lines, using at least three of the new adjectives learned during the activity.
Adaptations
To simplify: Perform the first two associations as a whole class to guide students. Allow the use of a dictionary for unknown terms.
To deepen: Ask students to write a short weather report for a region of the world using as many of the studied adjectives as possible. They can also be asked to find antonyms for each pair.
