Resource Objective & Content
The objective is to help students enrich their vocabulary to describe the taste and texture of food by identifying and using synonymous adjectives.
The document is a synonym matching exercise on the theme "Adjectives of Taste". Students must connect eight pairs of adjectives with similar meanings. The vocabulary covers main flavors such as delicious/tasty, spicy/hot, sweet/sugary, bitter/sour and textures or states such as fresh/crisp, soft/tender, liquid/fluid and raw/uncooked. This targeted activity gives students the necessary words to give their opinion on a dish, understand a menu, or describe a recipe.
Suggested Procedure
Before the activity (~5 min): MY FAVORITE DISH
Ask students to think about their favorite dish and describe it in a few words. Write the suggested adjectives on the board, classifying them into two columns: "Taste" and "Texture".
During the activity (~5-10 min): LEXICAL TASTING
Distribute the worksheet. Students, individually or in pairs, connect the synonym pairs.
Lead a collective correction. Clarify potential double meanings (e.g., hot for temperature and for "spicy") and nuances between terms (e.g., raw vs uncooked).
After the activity (~10 min): AT THE RESTAURANT
Create a simple, fictional menu on the board. In pairs, students act out a scene: a customer asks questions about the dishes using the new vocabulary (e.g., "Is the soup very spicy?"), and the waiter responds using synonyms (e.g., "Yes, it is quite hot.").
Adaptations
To simplify: Complete the most obvious pairs (delicious/tasty) as a large group. Use food images to illustrate the adjectives (crisp apple, soft cheese).
To extend: Ask students to write a short online review of a restaurant (real or imaginary) using at least five of the new adjectives from the worksheet.
