Activity Objective & Principle
The objective is to encourage students to broaden and nuance their vocabulary for describing transport and travel, by identifying and using synonyms of adjectives specific to this theme.
The activity consists of a synonym matching exercise. Students must connect pairs of adjectives with similar meanings. The vocabulary covers notions of speed, density, type of service, and comfort. This targeted activity provides students with the linguistic tools necessary to compare transport options or recount travel experiences.
Suggested Procedure
Before the activity (~5 min): My daily commute
Ask students to describe their journey to school. List the adjectives suggested on the board to activate their existing vocabulary.
During the activity (~5-10 min): Making the right connections
Distribute the activity sheet. Students, individually or in pairs, connect the synonym pairs. Facilitate a collective correction by having them pronounce the words and asking for an example sentence for each pair to contextualize the vocabulary.
After the activity (~10 min): Planning an itinerary
Propose a concrete task, such as comparing two transport options for a given journey. Students must justify their choice orally or in writing using at least four of the new adjectives learned during the activity.
Adaptations
To simplify: Complete the first two associations as a whole class. Allow dictionary use for unknown words.
To extend: Ask students to write an online review (positive or negative) of a transport company (real or imaginary) using as many of the studied adjectives as possible.
