Objective & Principle of the Activity

The objective is to lead students to broaden their vocabulary to describe various states of health, pain, or well-being, by identifying and appropriating synonyms of common adjectives.

The activity consists of a synonym matching exercise. Students must connect pairs of adjectives. The vocabulary covers notions of pain, illness, fatigue, and well-being. This targeted activity is ideal for preparing students for concrete situations such as a doctor's consultation or simply for talking about their general condition.

Suggested Procedure

Before the activity (~5 min): How do you feel?

Ask students how they feel in different situations (e.g., "when you have the flu," "after a sports session"). List the adjectives they propose on the board to activate their vocabulary.

During the activity (~5-10 min): Lexical Diagnosis

Distribute the activity sheet. Students, individually or in pairs, connect the synonym pairs. Lead a collective correction, focusing on pronunciation. Ask for example sentences to contextualize the words and highlight the nuances of meaning between certain terms.

After the activity (~10 min): At the Doctor's

Organize a role-play in pairs: one student is the patient, the other is the doctor. The patient must describe their symptoms using at least three of the new adjectives seen during the activity. The doctor must then ask questions and give advice.

Adaptations

  • To simplify: Complete the first two or three pairs as a large group to properly start the activity. Allow the use of a dictionary.

  • To extend: Ask students to classify the adjectives by intensity. They can also look for the antonym (the opposite) of each pair.
