Resource Objective & Content

The objective is to enable students to expand their vocabulary for describing social relationships and character traits, by identifying and mastering synonyms of common adjectives.

The document is an exercise sheet consisting of matching synonyms. Students must connect pairs of adjectives with similar meanings, all related to the theme of relationships. The pairs to be reconstructed are, for example, friendly/kind, lonely/alone or related/connected. This targeted vocabulary activity is essential to empower students to discuss social and interpersonal topics, a key B1 level skill.

Suggested Procedure

Before the activity (~5 min): ACTIVATE VOCABULARY

  • Ask an open question to the class, such as: "What makes a good friend?" or "How would you describe a very social person?". Write the suggested adjectives on the board.

During the activity (~5-10 min): CONNECT THE WORDS

  • Distribute the worksheet. Students work individually or in pairs to connect the synonym pairs.

  • Lead a collective correction. For each pair, have students repeat the words and ask one or two students to use them in a simple sentence to check comprehension.

After the activity (~10 min): PUTTING INTO CONTEXT

  • Propose a mini-scenario: "Imagine a new student arrives in your class. Describe his/her personality." or "Describe the relationship between two of your favorite characters from a series."

  • Students should produce a short description orally or in writing using at least three of the new adjectives from the worksheet.

Adaptations

  • To simplify: Do the first two pairs in a large group. Allow students to use a dictionary if necessary.

  • To deepen: Ask students to find the antonym (opposite) of each pair of adjectives. You can also start a discussion on the subtle nuances of meaning between synonyms (e.g., "lonely" vs "alone").
