What is The Big Challenge?
The Big Challenge is an English contest aimed at students from Grade 3 to Grade 9. This annual event, organised every spring in primary and secondary schools, is designed to motivate students to make progress in English while having fun.
Thanks to a variety of tasks (comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and general knowledge), students build their skills while challenging themselves and their classmates.

Who are we?
The Big Challenge was founded in France on 18 May 1999 at the initiative of a group of English teachers who wanted to encourage students to practise the language in a more active and engaging way.
Since then, the contest has grown continuously. Originally limited to France, it has gradually spread to other European countries. Here are the key milestones of this international expansion:
- 2005: Germany joins the adventure.
- 2007: Spain takes part in turn.
- 2012: Austria joins the competition.
- 2013: Sweden takes part for the first time.
- 2016: Poland and the Netherlands enter the competition.
- 2017: The contest expands to the Benelux and Italy.
Today, more than 500,000 students every year take part in The Big Challenge across Europe.
