The episode

Uniforms, assembly and school houses: two friends explore what makes a British school day different from the rest of Europe.

Teaching guide

Objective & content

This A1+ documentary, "School", is a dialogue between a guide and a student who compare the British school day with schools elsewhere in Europe. They cover the uniform, assembly in the big hall, calling teachers "Sir" and "Miss", school houses and points, the short lunch break, the end of the day at about half past three and the six-week summer holiday. The main language point is the present simple for routines, with the present continuous for what is happening now ("are wearing") and short comparisons. The vocabulary covers clothes (jumper, blazer, tie) and school life (assembly, head teacher, house). A line to notice: "A man is 'Sir'. A woman is 'Miss'." The skill is listening, followed by the in-app quiz.
