Objective & content
This Look Closer episode (the mini-series Wales: the land of the dragon, one surprising Welsh story per episode) is a short documentary about Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, a village on the island of Anglesey. A single narrator shows the station sign with its 58-letter Welsh name, then explains what the name talks about (a church of Saint Mary, white trees, dangerous water in the sea, a second church and a red cave) and points to the five posts the long sign needs. The twist: the village once had a much shorter name, people made it longer in the 1860s to bring visitors, and the people who live there use a short name today. The long name is shown on screen and never read aloud. It is a comprehension episode: the narration uses the present simple and the past simple (with was and did not), the comparative shorter and longer, and the imperative look; no grammar point is taught. Learners listen, then answer the 10 questions in the app: 7 on facts and 3 on vocabulary (post, visitor, short).
Materials & prerequisites
The folder holds the audio, the slideshow and the script. Each pack is a one-page PDF with the text, three pictures, the key words and the 10 questions: a pupil pack, and a teacher pack with the answers highlighted. It also has a pupil sheet and a teacher sheet with the answer key. It has no lesson plan. Play the episode twice, hand out the pupil pack, then use the closing question (Would you like to live in a place with a very long name?) for a short class discussion. Learners should know the words name, sign, train and church, and be able to read numbers such as 58 and decades such as the 1860s. The pack's key words explain the new words (station, village, letter, dangerous, short).
