Teaching guide

Objective & content

Golden Bay, Module 3, episode 10 (level A2+). Tiago video-calls his grandfather Vô in São Paulo, then Rodrigo (his father), Elena and Mason each share how it feels to leave a home and build a new one. The grammar focus is the past simple (regular and irregular, including was/were) and used to for habits that have stopped, as in "I used to hate it here." Vocabulary covers family, home and feelings, with migration as the cultural theme. Learners practise listening for detail, then answer the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

The 45-minute plan moves from a warm-up about what you miss in a new country to two listenings and a grammar contrast. Learners hear that the past simple describes finished events, while used to describes a habit or state that is no longer true. The plan asks for kind, optional sharing when learners discuss families who moved abroad. It includes [S] support and [A] extension paths.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Pairs discuss what they would miss first in a new country; note three ideas on the board.
  2. (5 min) Preview six words: homesick, noise, quiet, remember, betrayal, steal.
  3. (4 min) First listen, no pauses: where is Tiago and who does he talk to?
  4. (9 min) Second listen with three pauses (end of the call with Vô, the kitchen scene, the café scene) and short questions.
  5. (5 min) Comprehension check: five questions, oral or written.
  6. (4 min) Vocabulary practice: matching game or the student sheet.
  7. (6 min) Grammar focus: compare three script lines, then finish "When I was six, I used to ... but now I ...".
  8. (4 min) Pair speaking: a new student answers "Where did you live?", "What did you use to do there?", "Did you like it?"
  9. (3 min, optional) Write three sentences about a place: two in the past simple, one with used to.

Materials & prerequisites

The episode audio or the Academy app, a board or projector, the student sheet and the teacher sheet (PDF and HTML versions), and optional paper slips for the matching game. Learners should already know the present simple and basic past forms.

Curriculum alignment

4ème (cycle 4), axes "Travel and migration" and "Encountering others".

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
