Teaching guide

Objective & content

Golden Bay, Module 3, episode 11 (level A2+). Stella meets Theo, an 18-year-old who paints a legal, signed mural, and she becomes sure he is the anonymous Golden Bay artist. Mika warns her, Tiago keeps quiet in the café, and Theo himself says it is not him. The grammar focus is the past simple and used to for backstory, as in "Used to. I graduated." Vocabulary comes from art, feelings and detective language. Learners listen for who says what and why, then take the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

The 45-minute plan uses the meeting between Stella and Theo to teach how to talk about where someone grew up and what they did. Learners separate finished past events (past simple) from things that were true before and are not now (used to). The plan includes [S] support frames and [A] extension tasks.

Suggested procedure

  1. (4 min) Warm-up activating prior knowledge, with sticky notes or scrap paper.
  2. (6 min) Preview six key words with simple definitions.
  3. (4 min) First listen, no pauses: global comprehension.
  4. (8 min) Second listen with three pauses (the wall, the school scene, the café scene): where did Theo grow up, why does Mika doubt Stella, what does Tiago say?
  5. (5 min) Comprehension check: five questions, oral or written.
  6. (5 min) Vocabulary practice: matching game; the student sheet serves as homework.
  7. (6 min) Grammar focus: three script lines in the past simple, then used to; learners write two past simple sentences and one with used to about themselves.
  8. (4 min) Pair speaking: a new person in town answers "Where did you grow up?" and "What did you use to like?"
  9. (3 min, optional) Write four or five sentences about a person you know well.

Materials & prerequisites
