Objective & content

In this Module 7 episode the Golden Bay Gala arrives. Tiago picks up Elena at Café Marisol ("you look really great, Elena"), and they find the whole town on the pier, with Neil selling corsages and Harper running the night alone. Stella is nervous before she plays, and Mika calms her. The main grammar is talking about the future with going to and will, plus compliments with look and an adjective. Vocabulary covers clothes and feelings. The skill is listening for who is where and how each person feels.

Pedagogical guide

The 45-minute lesson for 4e (A2+) follows the four scenes. It moves from compliments and feelings to the contrast between going to for plans and will for promises, and ends with a pair role-play at a big evening.

Suggested procedure

  1. (10 min) Pre-listening: write "You look great!" on the board and talk about special evenings and feelings; preview chaos, fancy, ignore, trust, dramatic, committee.
  2. (13 min) Listening: a first listen for where the characters are, then a second listen with three pauses at the end of scenes 1, 2 and 3.
  3. (5 min) Comprehension check with five questions.
  4. (4 min) Vocabulary practice: a matching game, or the vocabulary questions of the student sheet.
  5. (6 min) Grammar focus: separate a plan, a promise and has to in three lines of the script, then write one sentence with going to and one with will.
  6. (7 min) Pair speaking: compliment, plan and promise before a big evening.
  7. (Homework, optional) Write four or five sentences: "A big night in my town."
