Teaching guide

Objective & content

Stella Voss follows her twin brother Mason to an old boat shed at night and finds the stencils and the wall of work of the Golden Bay Artist. Mason explains why he hid it, and Stella, hurt that he lied, decides that nobody will find out from her. The grammar focus is defining relative clauses with who ("I'm the one who says the true thing out loud."), with a link to reported speech through "you told me". Learners also meet vocabulary about feelings and street art (shed, stencil, fault, brave, deserve, lock) and practise listening for the reasons behind a character's choice.

Pedagogical guide

The lesson plan is a 45-minute lesson at A2+ for 4e. It is a serious family conversation, so give students time to react to the ending before the questions. Only a few lines use told me, so model the change from direct to reported speech on the board instead of expecting students to find it in the audio. Keep the discussion on the story and do not ask students to share private family secrets.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Activate prior knowledge: "Do you have a place where you can be yourself?", then predict who "the one" in the title is.
  2. (5 min) Preview six words: shed, stencil, fault, brave, deserve, lock.
  3. (5 min) First listen for gist: what is the main topic of the episode?
  4. (10 min) Second listen with three pauses: what Stella has found, why Mason started with the billboard, and why he lied to her.
  5. (5 min) Comprehension check with five questions, about where Stella follows Mason and what she decides.
  6. (4 min) Vocabulary practice: match the words and definitions.
  7. (6 min) Grammar focus: relative clauses with who from two lines of the script, then reported speech from "You told me you're the artist in this family."
  8. (5 min) Speaking extension: in pairs, Stella asks "Why lie to me?" and Mason explains; then discuss whether she was right to keep the secret.
