Objective & content
In the Golden Bay episode "Golden Boy", Cole, the father who left twelve years ago, charms his son Mason on the boardwalk, while Neil sells merch for Stella's Friday concert and Brody hangs around Tiago. Stella sees that Mason is about to confess something to Cole and decides to tell him everything that night. The grammar focus is the past perfect (had + past participle) contrasted with the past simple, as in "By the time I was ready to come back, you'd already stopped waiting." Vocabulary includes booking, merch, limited edition, act together and keep your distance. Learners work on listening comprehension, then the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
The episode is a 45-minute lesson at B1- for a 3eme class. The lesson keeps to two uses of the past perfect only: the earlier past action and by the time. Regret structures such as should have are left for a later episode. The topic is a parent who left, so keep the discussion on the characters and the language, and do not ask students about their own families. Play the last scene twice so that students notice Mason is about to share a secret before the grammar work starts.
Suggested procedure
- (3 min) Write a golden boy on the board and collect two or three ideas about who this is in a school.
- (5 min) Preview six words (booking, merch, limited edition, act together, keep your distance, con-man) with simple definitions.
- (4 min) First listen without interruption: where are the characters and who is talking to whom?
- (8 min) Second listen with three pauses: what Neil sells, what Cole says about the years he was away, what Stella decides.
- (6 min) Comprehension check with five oral or written questions.
- (4 min) Vocabulary practice: match the six words to their definitions, then write one sentence each.
- (8 min) Grammar focus: underline the verbs in two script lines, build the rule, then complete two gap sentences with by the time.
- (7 min) Pair speaking task: Mason tells a friend about meeting his father, using the past perfect at least once.
Optional homework: five sentences beginning "By the time I was ten, I had already ...".
