Objective & content

After the fire, Tiago stays at Neil's house, then accepts the pool house that Harper offers out of guilt. At school, Stella maps the murals and Neil lists suspects ("It might genuinely be anyone"), and Tiago compares her hunt with the rumours about him. Rodrigo asks him to give his wife time, and the episode ends when Tiago lets his mother's call ring. The grammar focus is the modals of possibility may, might and could, used for guessing and uncertainty. Vocabulary comes from rumours and gossip, art, the home and the family. The skill is listening for what people guess and what they offer.

Pedagogical guide

The episode deals with a family conflict and a fire rumour, so keep the discussion on the language and the guessing, and do not ask students to share personal family stories. Might and may work the same way here, and all three modals are followed by the base verb. French learners often add "to" or an "-s" ("he mights to come"), so correct by repeating the sentence in the right form.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Pre-listening: show a street mural, ask who painted it and elicit guesses with might or could.
  2. (5 min) Vocabulary preview: kindness, hunting, frightened, brave, prove, stranger.
  3. (5 min) First listen, no interruption: learners say what the episode is mainly about.
  4. (8 min) Second listen with pauses at 1:53, 2:56 and 3:50: Harper's offer, who the artist might be, what Rodrigo asks.
  5. (5 min) Comprehension check: five questions, oral or written.
  6. (5 min) Vocabulary practice: matching game or the vocabulary task of the student sheet.
  7. (7 min) Grammar focus: underline the modal in three lines from the script, elicit the rule, then play a guessing game.
  8. (6 min) Speaking: in pairs, a secret person is guessed with yes/no questions and "It might be...".
  9. (4 min, optional) Writing: four sentences guessing who painted a new mural in their town.
