Teaching guide

Objective & content

In "If He Hadn't Come", the opener of the sixth module, Mason and Stella discover leaked photos of his studio wall, Diane complains about a painted sign at home, and Cole announces a gallery date to Mason and Stella on the street. The grammar focus is the third conditional, used by three characters for three purposes: blame, regret and deflection. One example is Stella's line "If he hadn't come back, a lot of things would be different, Mom." The vocabulary covers regret, consequences, and the gallery and its invitations. Learners practise listening for detail and recognising the structure in the script.

Pedagogical guide

The episode is a B1- dialogue. In the lesson plan the third conditional is met as recognition, not production: students explain script lines, and they produce only first conditional sentences of their own. Keep to a few lines and replay them rather than teaching extra rules. One line mixes a past condition with a present result, which is a useful extra example for students who are ready.

Suggested procedure

  1. (4 min) Activate prior knowledge: in pairs, students think of a small event that changed what happened next.
  2. (6 min) Preview six words: vandalism, gossip, harmless, approval, sudden, agency.
  3. (5 min) First listen, without interruption: where are the characters in each scene, and what is the main problem?
  4. (12 min) Second listen with three pauses: who Stella blames for the photos, how Diane and Stella speak about their father's return, and how Cole answers Stella.
  5. (6 min) Comprehension check with the five in-app quiz questions.
  6. (4 min) Vocabulary practice: match the six words to definitions, then test a partner.
  7. (9 min) Grammar focus: two script lines on the board, and pairs explain what each says about the past.
  8. (6 min) Speaking extension: one student regrets something, the partner answers with a first conditional sentence, then they swap roles.
  9. (3 min, optional) Writing extension: complete one script line on a slip and add one first conditional sentence of advice.
