Teaching guide

Objective & content

Tiago starts at Golden Bay Academy with his stepsister Stella, who tells him the unwritten rule: "You smile enough, you fit in." In the hall he meets Neil, who sells shirts about the billboard mystery, and Harper, the school president, who smiles while she bins a student's form. When Tiago tells Harper she does not have to say things she does not mean, Brody, her boyfriend, watches and grows jealous. The grammar focus is the present simple for describing people and first impressions, with too and enough. Learners also meet vocabulary for personality and social pressure (fit in, mystery, suspect, glad, mean, sweet). The main skill is listening comprehension, then the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

The lesson plan lasts 45 minutes around a listening of about 2 minutes 20. The present simple is a revision point at this level; too and enough are the sharper target, and the script uses them to contrast how characters perform and what they really feel. Two threads stay open on purpose (who painted the billboard, and the Harper, Tiago and Brody triangle): do not resolve them. Support [S] and extension [A] options are given at every stage.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Warm-up: have you ever arrived somewhere where everyone seemed very friendly, but you were not sure it was real? Collect words on the board.
  2. (5 min) Vocabulary preview: fit in, mystery, suspect, glad, mean, sweet, with a "Says / Really means" chart.
  3. (15 min) Listening: a first listen without pausing (who is not performing happiness?), then a second listen with three pauses (Stella's smiling rule, Harper and the form, Harper's reaction to Tiago and Brody watching), each with one question.
  4. (5 min) Comprehension check: six oral or written questions from the quiz.
  5. (5 min) Vocabulary practice: a matching game or the worksheet.
  6. (5 min) Grammar: sort lines from the script under describing people, general truths, and too and enough, then drill the forms.
  7. (5 min, optional) Speaking in pairs: explain the unwritten rules of your own school to a new student.
  8. Optional writing: a post by Neil advertising his shirts, or a text from Brody to a friend.
