Teaching guide

Objective & content

Back at Golden Bay Academy, Stella, Neil and Tiago find the whole school obsessed with an unknown street artist. Harper, who runs the school paper, says "I have been building a case" and names Tiago as a suspect; Elena is pulled into her investigation, and Stella tries to stop her. Learners focus on the present perfect continuous for an activity in progress ("I have been building a case") against the present perfect simple for a result ("Nobody has even come close"). The main skill is listening comprehension, followed by a short reporter and witness speaking task.

Pedagogical guide

This 45-minute lesson for a 3eme class (B1-) rests on one test: is the activity the focus (continuous) or the result (simple)? The script supplies the example lines, and the contracted spoken forms (I've been, it's been) should be modelled aloud before students write. Stella's reaction to the little gold house carries a hidden meaning: leave the question open and let students predict what happens next.

Suggested procedure

  1. (4 min) Show a photo of a mural. Pair talk: who paints on walls, and is it art or vandalism?
  2. (6 min) Preview six words: suspect, mural, obsessed, to narrow down, to build a case, to post.
  3. (4 min) First listen, without stopping. Ask what the episode is about.
  4. (8 min) Second listen with three pauses: why Harper suspects Tiago, what she has been doing to find the artist, and what the little gold house might be.
  5. (6 min) Comprehension check on five questions.
  6. (5 min) Vocabulary matching, or the tasks on the student sheet.
  7. (7 min) Grammar focus on three lines from the script, then a mini whiteboard game with present perfect continuous sentences using for or since.
  8. (5 min) Pair role-play: a reporter questions a student with the present perfect continuous.
