Objective & content

In this episode, Tiago phones his grandfather to say that Golden Bay is beautiful but too quiet, then walks into Café Marisol, where Elena works behind the counter. Elena tells him that she and Stella used to be best friends, and she tries not to show how worried she is when her mother decides to close early. The language focus is the present simple to describe a place, short comparatives ("She found cooler friends.") and as...as ("Nothing is as loud as home."). Vocabulary comes from the themes of towns, shops and money, plus words for feelings. Learners practise listening comprehension, then the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

This 45-minute lesson for a 4eme class (A2+) uses the comparatives as more than a measuring tool: Tiago never says the town is bad, he says that nothing is as loud as home. Two threads are left open on purpose, the fading friendship between Elena and Stella and the café's money troubles, so do not pre-explain them. Note that "cooler" is used in its social sense (more fashionable), not about temperature. Differentiation is offered for learners who need more support ([S]) and for advanced learners ([A]) at each stage.

Suggested procedure

  1. Pre-listening, activate prior knowledge (5 min): show two contrasting places and collect adjectives such as clean, quiet, messy, cozy.
  2. Pre-listening, vocabulary preview (5 min): present mess, slow, billboard, close early and cooler.
  3. First listen (about 7 min): play the whole episode (about 3 minutes) without pausing and ask what Tiago finds at the end of his walk.
  4. Second listen (about 13 min): pause at three points to find the comparative Tiago uses, what happened between Elena and Stella, and what Elena tries not to show.
  5. Comprehension check (5 min): ask six oral or written questions drawn from the episode exercises.
  6. Vocabulary practice (5 min): run the matching game or hand out the vocabulary worksheet.
  7. Grammar focus (5 min): sort lines from the episode into describing a place and comparing two things, then drill the forms.
  8. Homework or early finishers: a pair speaking task on a "perfect but fake" place and a "small but real" one, and a short text Tiago might send his grandfather.
