Teaching guide

Objective & content

In this dialogue (three scenes, no narrator), Cole returns to Golden Bay and charms Mason and Tiago at the family dinner table while Neil watches from the porch, quietly impressed. Diane and Stella are cold, and Stella explains what he did before he left: "You'd already run up a mountain of debt in Mom's name before you left." The grammar focus is the past perfect (had + past participle) for the earlier event, contrasted with the past simple for the later one. Vocabulary comes from family, money and personality. Learners practise listening, then the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

The target structure sits in the backstory lines of Stella and Diane (Nobody had heard from you, I'd built every single thing); the rest of the dinner scene is context. Learners decide which past event came first, using a timeline. Stress the short form 'd, which students often hear as would. The situation involves a parent who left: keep the discussion on the characters, never on students' own families.

Suggested procedure

  1. (4 min) Activate prior knowledge: someone you have not seen for years comes back.
  2. (6 min) Vocabulary preview: debt, disappear, abandon, trust, modest, compliment.
  3. (4 min) First listen for global comprehension.
  4. (10 min) Second listen with four pauses and discussion: why Neil is impressed, what happened first, how Diane feels, who trusts Cole.
  5. (6 min) Comprehension check with five questions, following the in-app quiz.
  6. (4 min) Vocabulary practice: matching game or the student sheet.
  7. (8 min) Grammar focus: two lines from the script on a timeline, then a pair exercise with had and the past simple.
  8. (5 min) Speaking extension: reasons to trust Cole and reasons not to.
  9. (3 min, optional) Writing extension: three sentences about a person who came back.
