Objective & content
Tiago asks Stella's forgiveness at the skate ramp, Stella plays her song for her brother Mason in the basement studio, and Neil arrives with a contract clause that only works because Mason is a minor. Each character voices a regret about the past, for example "I wish I'd found this earlier, before you said yes, Mason." The grammar focus is I wish / if only + past perfect, and the vocabulary covers regret, trust, secrets and contracts (contract, clause, terms, dishonest, minor, deal with). Learners work on listening comprehension first, then on producing their own regret sentences.
Pedagogical guide
The lesson is a 45-minute listening lesson (about 4 minutes of audio) built on four objectives: follow the three scenes and say who regrets what, understand six contract words, form I wish / if only + past perfect, and talk about a personal regret in two or three sentences. Keep the focus on the past only: the present form (I wish I knew) is a different point. The story involves family secrets and a contract that takes advantage of a minor, so keep the discussion on language and fairness and let students say "I prefer not to share".
Suggested procedure
- Activate prior knowledge (4 min): students think about "I wish I had..." and share with a partner without giving details.
- Vocabulary preview (6 min): present the six contract words with simple definitions; support learners with drawings or examples, and let advanced learners guess definitions in pairs.
- First listen (5 min): play the whole episode without interruption and ask where the characters are in each scene and what the mood is.
- Second listen (7 min): pause at about 0:57 (what does Tiago regret?) and at about 3:40 (why is the contract a problem for Mason?).
- Comprehension check (5 min): five oral or written questions; struggling learners answer the first three with two choices each.
- Vocabulary practice (4 min): match the six words to their definitions, then use two of them in a sentence.
- Grammar focus (6 min): put three lines from the script on the board, elicit the rule (had + past participle for a regret about a finished past), then practise with new cues.
- Speaking extension (5 min): pairs tell each other one small regret with "I wish I had..." and ask "What would you do differently?"
- Writing extension, optional (3 min): three sentences in the voice of Tiago, Mason or Neil.
