Objective & content
In the Golden Bay episode "Signed", Cole pitches the secret street artist's studio to the dealer Marcus, who answers that "it has to be proven". Stella tells Neil that her brother Mason is the artist and asks him to take down his Artist Watch forums, and Neil agrees. Cole then presses Mason about credit and money. The grammar focus is the passive voice across tenses, for example "The pieces aren't signed", "It was found by me", "The name has been found, has it?" and "It has to be proven". Vocabulary covers art, authenticity and value (authentic, anonymous, stencil, mural, buyer). Learners practise listening comprehension, then the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
The episode is a 50-minute lesson at B1- for a 3eme class. The passive carries the plot itself (who made the work, and whether that can be proven), so students see it as a real communicative tool and not as an isolated drill. The episode ends on a father preparing to expose his son's secret for money. It is fine for students to find Cole's choice troubling: that is the season's moral thread, not something to resolve in class.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Activate prior knowledge with a discussion prompt on the cover image of the secret artist.
- (5 min) Preview the key art and authenticity words with simple definitions, using the flashcards if you wish.
- (15 min) Listen twice: once without pausing (who wants to sell the work, who wants to protect the secret), then again with three pauses, at the end of each scene, to check what Cole really sells, why Neil agrees to erase his own site, and what Marcus still needs.
- (5 min) Comprehension check with six oral or written questions.
- (5 min) Vocabulary practice: match words such as vanish, buyer, trail, stencil and mural to their meanings.
- (5 min) Grammar focus: sort lines from the script on the board under "who made it", "can it be proven?" and "questions in the passive", then drill the forms with the exercises.
- Optional: a pair task in which a dealer and a manager discuss whether a work is genuine, using at least two passive sentences, and a short writing task using at least one passive sentence.
