Objective & content
In this episode of Golden Bay, Stella stops herself in the middle of a lyric at Café Marisol, and Harper, who now runs the school paper, notices. Elena is working her shift nearby. In the second scene, Cole tells Mason that dealers have looked at the photographs and that "the collection is being valued right now", although Mason was promised something small and private. The grammar focus is the passive of transactions and value: present continuous passive, modal passive ("It could be sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars") and past passive ("it was never named"). Learners build vocabulary on money, auctions and dealers, and practise listening comprehension.
Pedagogical guide
The lesson lasts 45 minutes. Both scenes are about being looked at or valued without being asked, so the same passive forms can describe something gentle (a friend noticing) and something predatory (Cole selling Mason's secret): the form does not judge, the context does. The episode is dialogue only and ends on one word, "Payday", with no reply; let that silence land before the comprehension check. The plan gives [S] support and [A] extension tasks for each activity.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Show the cover image without context. Ask how learners would feel if something they made in private became famous and valuable without their agreement.
- (5 min) Pre-teach dealer, collection, auction, exclusive, worth and payday.
- (15 min) First listen without pausing: whom is each scene about, and how do they react to being looked at? Second listen with three pauses (end of Scene 1, Mason and Cole in Scene 2, the final word).
- (5 min) Comprehension check with six questions.
- (5 min) Vocabulary practice: matching game or the student sheet.
- (5 min) Grammar: sort the lines into present continuous passive and modal or past passive, then drill two items from the exercises. Note that "It was never worth anything before" is be + adjective, not a passive.
- (5 min, optional) Pair role-play: Cole pitches the "good news" and Mason pushes back, then Harper names what she noticed and Stella deflects. A short written extension is also possible.
