Objective & content

In this Golden Bay episode, a rumour about Tiago keeps growing. His stepsister Stella stops a boy who repeats it, then Harper tells her boyfriend Brody to drop it ("You've made your point, everyone's bored, and now it's over"). Harper explains to Tiago that her own family was once the town's story. The grammar focus is the present perfect simple for something that has happened and still matters now, as in "I've heard nine different versions of it since Monday." The vocabulary covers rumours, family and school life. Learners work on listening comprehension, vocabulary and grammar, with a cultural look at a US high school.

Pedagogical guide

The 45-minute plan opens with a general question about untrue talk at school, then two listenings, grammar and pair work on checking a story before repeating it. The episode mentions a rumour about fires and a father who left: stay with what the characters say and do, and do not ask students to share their own stories. The audio contracts the auxiliary (You've, I've, Nobody's), so replay lines slowly and ask students to count the contractions. The episode shows a rumour stopped, not solved, since Brody still wants proof.

Suggested procedure

  1. Pre-listening (10 min): pairs discuss what to do when someone says something untrue about you; preview six words (rumor, whisper, proof, dangerous, scared, stepbrother).
  2. First listen (4 min): students name the main topic.
  3. Second listen (11 min): pause at the end of the hallway, courtyard and art room scenes to ask what Stella does, why Harper tells Brody to stop, and what Harper says about her family.
  4. Comprehension check (5 min): five oral or written questions.
  5. Vocabulary practice (5 min): matching game, or the vocabulary exercises on the student sheet.
  6. Grammar focus (5 min): have/has + past participle on three lines from the script, contrasted with a finished time in the past simple.
  7. Speaking (5 min): in pairs, one student hears a rumour and the other asks questions such as "Have you checked it?", then they swap.
