Objective & content

In the Golden Bay finale of this module, Elena calmly breaks up with Tiago, Stella and Neil talk about him at the school merch table, and Harper refuses his invitation to go out. The grammar focus is modal perfects in the past (should have, could have, might have + past participle) for regret and criticism. Tiago starts two of these sentences and cannot finish them, which makes the structure easy to spot. Learners listen for the three scenes, then work on vocabulary such as perform, honest, brand, protect and truth. One line to notice: "You should have fought to keep her."

Pedagogical guide

The lesson lasts 50 minutes and follows the episode: listening first, then the grammar. Learners follow why Elena leaves and why Harper says no, then recognise and produce modal perfects for past choices. The lesson plan asks students to compare how teenagers in the United States and in their own country see popularity, social media and loyalty. Keep the discussion on the characters' choices and make students' own experiences optional.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Pairs talk about a time they thought "I should have said something"; collect three or four ideas.
  2. (5 min) Preview six words: perform, honest, brand, concept, protect, truth.
  3. (5 min) First listen, without interruption: what is the topic and who is unhappy at the end?
  4. (10 min) Second listen with three pauses (end of the café scene, end of the merch table scene, end of the audio) and a question at each.
  5. (5 min) Comprehension check: five oral or written questions.
  6. (5 min) Vocabulary practice: matching game, then one new sentence each.
  7. (8 min) Grammar focus: three lines from the script on the board, then the rules for should have, could have and might have.
  8. (7 min) Speaking: each pair writes three sentences about what one character could have done differently, and a partner guesses the character.
