Objective & content
In this episode of Golden Bay, Brody tells Harper he can name the mystery artist by Friday, and mentions that the twins' dad is setting up a sale. Neil is deleting the fan site he built, with Stella beside him, until Mason appears in the doorway and learns that Stella told Neil his secret. Finally, Cole offers Brody a soda and a job. The grammar focus is a review of the passive across tenses: future passive ("The story is going to be broken properly"), present continuous passive ("Mason's name is being passed around") and the informal get-passive ("He still gets caught"). No new structure is introduced. Vocabulary covers rumours, hunting for a story and online sites, and learners practise listening comprehension.
Pedagogical guide
The lesson lasts 45 minutes. Three hunts close in on Mason, so the passive is a natural way to talk about things done to him without naming who does them. Use the episode to consolidate the passive forms met earlier in the module, and compare the formal passive with the informal get-passive. The episode is dialogue only. Its last scene is a dark turn, so leave time for the pairs to discuss why the offer works on Brody. The plan gives [S] support and [A] extension tasks for each activity.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Show the cover image without context. Ask whether the man looks kind, whether he is, and why a kind smile can be dangerous. Collect ideas and do not confirm them yet.
- (5 min) Pre-teach the key vocabulary: muscle, hunting, headline, trail, con man.
- (15 min) First listen without pausing. Second listen with three pauses (end of Scene 1, end of Scene 2, the final walk-off) to check what each character wants.
- (5 min) Comprehension check with six questions.
- (5 min) Vocabulary practice: matching game or the student sheet.
- (5 min) Grammar: sort the lines into three columns (future passive, present continuous passive, get-passive), then drill the forms from the exercises.
- (5 min) Pair role-play: one learner "reads" a partner the way Cole reads Brody, then another pair has Harper explain why she does journalism properly.
- (Homework, optional) Write three or four sentences of a text Brody might send that night, with one passive sentence and one new word.
